What is SaaS?
Software as a Service (SaaS) entails subscribing to an application that is hosted; in contrast to purchasing and owning the software and its associated costs. This is a benefit to businesses that provides cost savings and an increase in productivity.
Overview

SaaS, an acronym for "Software as a Service", was coined in the late 1990's. The delivery model is based on user subscription of services that an application or application suite provides.

Subscribing as a service rather than purchasing and owning the software offers savings in infrastructure , maintenance and the personnel requried to keep the application updated and running.

Features and Benefits

Low per use and per user monthly costs, no licensing fees, no hardware or operating systems to purchase and maintain, no resource demands — all valid benefits to a business wanting to minimize operating costs.

The uses can vary and depending on the application's objectives can be a solution in meeting operating requriements without the burdens of cost, convenience and resources.

Hosted Applications

The most widely used type of SaaS is hosted emails and instant messaging being served by the likes of Google and Yahoo. In addition to email addresses in the gmail.com and yahoo.com domains they provide services beyond just sending and receiving emails through their servers.

Businesses that have websites and use email addresses with their own domain extensions are served either by their web hosting companies or their own internet web, email and messaging servers.
